Italy missed the 2018, 2022 and now 2026 World Cups — the first World Cup-winning nation ever to miss three tournaments in a row. What makes it worse: the 2026 edition has 48 teams, making qualification easier than ever.
Italy finished 2nd in qualifying behind Norway and lost their UEFA playoff final to Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties. The Italian football chief subsequently resigned.
